What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a Japanese form of bodywork. Its roots can be traced all the way back to the origins of Chinese Medicine. Being rooted in the history of this medicine means it can be used on a multitude of issues. It can also be a very good form of self care. It focuses on the idea of chi or the moving life force in the body. In Shiatsu a proper depth of touch is applied along these channels to help open and clear the blocks in the body. These blocks will be experienced as stress, discomfort, pain, or disfunction. Shiatsu is traditionally performed on a mat on the floor and with the receiver fully clothed.

Heal

Shiatsu promotes healing in the body by opening the traditional Meridians of Chinese Medicine. It is in these channels where information is relayed to the whole body. A comparison of how modern medicine views the nervous system is a good analog to the idea of the meridians. It is only when these channels get blocked that we experience disease or pain. By opening these channels the body is able to fully integrate all functions properly and allow healthy movements to be reestablished.

Getting a Shiatsu treatment can provide a safe space for you to get away from the stressors of life and allow the mind and body to relax. It is in this relaxed state that the things in life that have started to become frustrations and blocks can get a resolution.

 

Treatment Process

When arriving for a Shiatsu treatment it is appropriate to arrive in some clothing that allows movement of the body. Shiatsu integrates stretches along with finger pressure to help the body release and open. In a Shaistu treatment it starts with an initial goal setting. In this time we will define the goals we are working towards and try and get a clear picture of what is currently happening in the body. After the goals have clearly been established a hara assessment is done. Hara is a Japanese term used to describe the abdominal area of the body. This assessment is what gives us more depth into what is happening in the body and the functions or channels that need to be balanced to allow the body to tap into its natural healing resources. Lastly, a full body treatment will be done to help clear and open the body. It is when the body is fully integrated as one unit that the best results will manifest.
